iJustine’s Tips For Making A Music Video

by JohnOfJordan on November 13, 2009

iJustine made a music video for the Nikon Festival and in this video she takes us through her creative process – from idea generation to finding a backing track to recording vocals, setting up shots and finally editing.

Justine’s tips include:

  • Find royalty free music. She uses iStockPhoto.com for this purpose.
  • Limit headphone spill by having your backing track loud enough to hear and no louder.
  • If you’re shooting outside, schedule around daylight hours and use available light effectively.
  • Plan your shots to help the process move along smoothly.
  • If you are the camera operator and the talent and using a camera where you cannot see what you’re shooting, consider using an external object – Justine uses trees and cushions – as a reference point for framing and getting correct exposures.
  • Shooting in public places is deeply problematic as bystanders stop to ask questions.
  • When using SD cards, use a high speed card to help speed up the process.

It’s quite inspiring to see one lone woman singing and dancing in the streets, being her own camera operator, and dealing with the barrage of questions she meets while trying to get these shots.
