NEWS: YouTube Script Causes Chaos

by JohnOfJordan on July 4, 2010

A script that has been circulated around YouTube comments causing the page to redirect to another website with a disturbing and digusting video.

YouTube Script Causes Chaos

This is obviously a malicious act and all I can really suggest is that you avoid the site until YouTube/Google can rectify this issue.

Video: How Do You Find Cool People On YouTube?

by JohnOfJordan on March 23, 2010

So how do you find cool people on YouTube? Who do you think is doing interesting stuff on here?

After writing about Number Games I came to realise that my YouTube experience was fairly insular.

What I’m wondering is:
* How do you find cool people on YouTube?
* Who do you think is doing great stuff on YouTube? (And if you think you’re doing great stuff on YouTube, I want to know about it! Now’s no time to be modest.)

Thank you to MuggleSam who has been pimping the hell out of my channel. I’m almost at a 1000 subscribers. Fun times!

Number Games

by JohnOfJordan on March 20, 2010

“About to reach 1,000 subs,” ObviouslyBenHughes writes on Twitter. “It’s a number, but I’m so happy!”

This is one of the most pervasive paradoxes surrounding online video. When it comes to numbers – be they subscribers or views – they somehow mean everything and nothing, simultaneously. We don’t ‘care’ about them, we aren’t motivated by them, though, oddly enough, we are happy when they go up.

Reubnick is a familiar voice in the Will Video For Food backrow. It is easy to feel discouraged when you feel like you’re producing great stuff online and the response is less than ethusiastic. (Though we might be reminded of Nalts’ comments about the the curse of subscriber self-worth. It’s a bottomless pit, folks!) Clearly disappointed in the views he was receiving for his most recent video, I thought I would try to put it into some perspective. I noted that his video got more views over night than mine had over several days (and I had more subscribers than him).

“Wait a minute!” he objects. “I thought you were a partner and all that! How is that all you got?”

News: YouTube Closed Captions

by JohnOfJordan on March 16, 2010

YouTube are very insistent that their closed caption audio transcription service is in beta and when you stop to test it out for yourself, you quickly realise why. It leaves a lot to be desired. But, on the upside, the gap between what is actually said and what is ‘transcribed’ lends itself to much hilarity.

YouTube Closed Captions: Twish1999 Is Payment For The Well?

Take, for example, this offering from Twish1999.

What she actually says:

I’d repair you in a flash.

What YouTube ‘transcribes’:

I’m payment for the well.

Have you encountered any other examples of YouTube Closed Caption hilarity? Let me know in the comments…

News: VEVO Says ‘No’

January 19, 2010
