Tip: Licensing Cover Tunes

by JohnOfJordan on December 16, 2008

Following the recent suspension of Ysabellabrave, there has been a lot of confusion regarding music licensing online.

NotChristopherMast takes us through the process of registering a cover song using a mechanical license with Harry Fox Online.

Christopher notes a few caveats:

  • The online mechanical licensing for Harry Fox Online is only available for 2,500 or fewer copies. With facilities like YouTube it is infinitely possible that a video may get more than 2,500 views, in which case the mechanical license would have to be renegiotated.
  • If you are covering a song online and do not have a way of making money out of the cover (say through the YouTube partner program or sales via iTunes) any licensing arrangement is going to result in an income loss.
